Assisting a Client to Walk Safely (Ambulation)

๐Ÿ“… June 26, 2026 ✍️ By Piewy Team

Helping a client walk keeps them strong and independent, but must be done safely. A frequently tested skill.

Before Walking

  • Check the care plan and non-slip footwear.
  • Apply a gait belt if used.
  • Walking aids within reach and in good repair.
  • Clear the path.

Walking With the Client

  1. Stand slightly behind and to the weaker side.
  2. Hold the gait belt, not the arm.
  3. Walk at the client's pace.
  4. Encourage them to look ahead.

Walkers and Canes

  • Walker moves forward first, then the client steps to it.
  • Cane is held on the strong side and moves with the weak leg.

If the Client Starts to Fall

Don't try to hold them up. Ease them down slowly, protecting the head, guiding toward your body. Then call for help and assess before moving them.

๐Ÿ”‘ Key Takeaways

  • Use a gait belt, stand on the weaker side.
  • Cane on strong side; walker moves first.
  • Walk at the client's pace.
  • If they fall, ease them down.
