Household Management for PSWs: Light Cleaning & Organization

๐Ÿ“… June 23, 2026 ✍️ By Piewy Team

Keeping a clean, safe home is part of supporting a client's independence and comfort. But your role is support, not full housekeeping — know the difference.

What PSWs Usually Help With

  • Light tidying and organization (putting items away safely).
  • Dishes and wiping down kitchen surfaces after meals.
  • Taking out garbage and recycling.
  • Changing bed linens.
  • Sweeping or vacuuming high-traffic areas.
  • Light laundry (washing, drying, folding).
  • Removing clutter to prevent falls.

What is Usually NOT a PSW Role

  • Deep cleaning (scrubbing baseboards, walls, windows).
  • Yard work or outdoor maintenance.
  • Pet care beyond daily feeding.
  • Cooking full meals (light meals and snacks are okay).

Keep It Safe

  1. Keep pathways clear so the client does not trip.
  2. Use safe cleaning products, properly stored.
  3. Wash your hands after cleaning.
  4. Report hazards like loose floorboards or broken railings.

Encourage Independence

The goal is not to do everything for the client, but to help them maintain their home and independence. When safe, let them fold their own laundry or organize their drawers. Your job is to support, not take over.
