Many clients have a urinary catheter. While PSWs do not insert them, you do help keep the system clean and safe — and infection prevention here is commonly tested.
Keep It Below the Bladder
The drainage bag must always stay below the level of the bladder so urine flows down and does not back up. Never hang the bag on the bed rail above the client or rest it on the floor.
Prevent Infection
- Always wash your hands before and after care.
- Keep the system closed — do not disconnect tubing.
- Clean the area around the catheter daily with soap and water.
- Make sure tubing is not kinked or pulled.
Emptying the Bag
- Wear gloves.
- Open the drain valve into a clean container, not letting it touch anything.
- Close the valve and clean it.
- Measure and record the output.
What to Report
Report cloudy, bloody, or strong-smelling urine; little or no urine; leaking; or any complaints of pain. These can signal infection or a blockage.
